Default Need some input

I am about to beat my head against the wall.....arguing with my dad about his bow. He is shooting a High Country...Ultra Extreme I think??....anyway, the bow has a short brace height. He is using a whisker biscuit and the fletchings on his arrows are in the bristles of the WB while the arrow is nocked. He thinks this is causing accuracy problems...i told him once he draws the bow.....it doesn't matter how long or short the fletchings are. The fletchings on the arrows he is shooting now are 5 inches I think...he is wanting to go down to 2 1/4 inch to fix the problem. I just don't think there is a problem with his bow, other than he doesn't shoot it very often. He is always wanting to tinker with his setup a month before the season LOL...drives me nuts. Who is right here?

I will agree with you on this one. I'd also agree that tinkering with setups close to hunting season is foolish, unless you actualluy know what you are doing. This is what all the other months are for prior to hunting season. Tinkering is a good way to find what work and doesn't work with any particular setup, but only if you shoot enough and have good enough form to tell the difference between any changes. There are no quick fixes and magic potions in archery. Most good shooters shoot well because they dedicate the time to improve their shooting form. Somewhere along the way they learn to tinker with stuff and learn how bows/arrows work together. There is no substitue for work.

That is the likely cause of his accuracy problems.

There was a guy at the range one evening several years back with a brand new Hoyt single cam, set up with a WB. His vanes were inside the bisquit at brace. Well, he went to draw and those bristles clamped down on the vanes and locked the shaft in place. He pulled the string back and all that came back with the string was the nock. The arrow was dangling in the biscuit. About the time we all yelled for him to let down, he triggered that release. BLAMMO!

After we cut him out of the knots the string and cables made around his head (well, that's a slight exaggeration. The string and cables did pop out of their tracks in the cam and idler though and his axles were bent.), we told him what had happened.

After seeing that, I would not use a WB with a setup that put the fletchings inside the rest.

I could see going to 4" feathers for clearance, but 2 1/4"? No way. Only if he was using mechanical heads, and even that would be dicey. Now, if he switched to Blazers that might work. Otherwise, I'd say he needs to use a different rest that'll allow him to use a decent fletching length.
