Default Moose skull plate width

Has anyone ever shortened the width of the skull plate for mounting purposes? My moose seems so wide to me. Technically, it's all about the horns when you are doing a horn mount correct? I just don't want the leather covering to be so wide. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated! I'm really torn on doing this, or just keeping him how it is.

I am at a loss as to why you would want to alter the width of an antler spread to be shorter. If you do, it is no longer representative of the animal in life and I also think it would not look right. Technically, it is not all about the "antlers" the spread takes into account both the width of the skull as well as the combined length of both antlers. You may as well just pop off both antlers and stick them in holes in a plaque as do what you are thinking about doing.

Thanks for your reply. I guess I am just used to looking at my deer mounts. The moose is just so big looking to me. I am going to mount him the exact way that he was made.

I don't see any other alternative without ruining it and making it look like an abortion!

I started the mount today. He will maintain his original skull plate. I'm sure it will look better without any skull cutting!
