I'm working on tanning a deer hide (hair-on) that my boyfriend and I unfortunately witnessed the doe getting hit by a car. I've been working on fleshing out the hide, however a few sections of the hide are dry. So my questions are:
1. Is there a way to rehydrate the hide to finish fleshing?
2. What processes does everyone prefer? From what I've read I'm assuming the process goes as followed. If I'm wrong, please correct me.
A. Flesh hide
B. Salt hide and leave on for 24 hours
C. Scrape off excess salt and re-salt for another 24 hours
D. Rinse hide, let it get mostly dry then apply tanning solution. (I bought my tanning solution at Tandy Leather Factory)
E. Work/ pull hide while it finishes drying to keep it soft.
3. Should I use any a degreaser or any other chemicals in the process to help preserve the hide?
