Yes, I used a kit from WASCO on the first deer I mounted. The only difference was, I had a taxidermist send the cape out to get tanned instead of using the dry preservative that comes with the kit.

Nowadays, I use a preservative called John Rinehart Tanning Solution. It works great as long as the Head is caped out right away and salted. Not a couple days after it is killed.

thats really good for a first mount.
Is the preservative it comes with it no good or do you just like the other stuff.
And how long did it take you.
Thanks,

Cody

The preservative that comes with it is a dry preservative. It is a powder that you put on the hide. The John Rinhart stuff is a liquid. I feel it is much better.

I saved the dry stuff and used it on some squirrels.

This place helped me alot

I have never done any taxidermy work but I have seen a lot of bad stuff out there, and that is from so called pro's who do it all the time. If the deer you plan on doing is special to you or a monster buck I would save the money. If you just have a doe or small buck you want to practice on I would do it yourself to learn. Several hundred dollars puts a dent in my budget but I know as I get older I will be glad I spent the money when my mount is still in good shape and not falling apart.

Most folks start the same way. Nothing wrong with a kit and in the end you will have a greater appreciation for what a taxidermist puts into a mount.

Old post...and not the same kind of kit in the end but I found a new toy!
