Default What do you pro's think about taxidermy schools?

Hey guys- I know there are a lot of pro taxidermists on the forum. What do you guys think about taxidermy schools? Found one not far from me, a six week school for 7,000. Is this a waste of time, or do you guys support these for someone wanting to get into the business?
Thanks for your input- appreciate it!

We didn't have those in 1960 we had to learn from someone working for free in their shop.

You’ll learn almost as much by getting some good videos and learning from them, and they don’t cost $7k. Once you get familiar, a few days of one on one training with the right person will be money well spent. The “schools” for the most part cover just the basics. There are some good ones, but none are worth seven grand for six weeks. That’s ridiculous

Go on ebay or the for-sale section of Taxidermy.net and buy some used videos first.

I think schools are great, if you find the right school. Books and videos don't even come close to comparing to having a qualified instructor there to teach and guide you through the process. It's tough to ask questions to a video. Most good schools will also cover the business aspect of the industry. Don't think that after completing school that you will be ready to roll, knowing everything you need to know, because you won't. Continuing education by attending conventions, joining your state taxidermy association is important if you want to continue to improve.
