Squirrel hat

I want to make a hat out of squirrel pelts but know nothing about it. Is there a special process to preserve the fur and tail? If so, can you do this at home? What's the best sewing method? Or should I forget the whole thing?

long process to explain right now... triple mule team boraxo or something is a cheap way to preserve the stuff...simply.. skin it, nail it to a board to stretch it and scrape all the fat and crap off... mix the boraxo with some water till it is a paste and rub it on there. do this several times till the hide is dry and tanned...sewing it I have no idea. Run a google search maybe?
