Pelt preping

Default Pelt preping

Not 100% sure if this is the right forum, so sorry if it isn't, but I'm just wondering what has to be down to the hide of a coyote or other animal. I'm not even sure what its called exactly, but how do you get the skin to be "dried", if thats the right way to explain it.

Scrape off all meat and fat, lay flat say in top of a plywood or crate and salt the heck of it, then 24 hours later shake off the wet salt and aply dry salt again, then after another 24 hours or longer it can be tanned.

how exactly does one "tan" a hide? (LOL - saying that reminds me of some of my younger days, my mother used to say that alot)
