The velvet looks like it is comming off. Is that because it was about time to start shedding when it was shot or because the mount is old? How long should the velvet last on a mount?

It was intentionally mounted that way, it's permanate when done correctly.

Yes...I have a velvet mount as well...a big 8. It is permanent if done correctly.
