Default Hide Tanning?

i was wondering if ya'll had any ideas on tanning a deer hide. do ya'll have your taxi's do it, do you do it yourself, and do you use a pre-made compound? i've heard of people making their own tanning solutions so i wondered if ya'll had any special secrets or suggestions.

Default RE: Hide Tanning?

The chemicals are simple, a basic formula is 2 LBS aluminum sulphate 4 lbs of salt to each GALLON of water, mix in a PLASTIC bucket not metal.
But processing the skin salting it, thinning it even and de-bacterializing it is where the first steps are important, then after the chemical bath, using the right oils and breaking the hide, is not worth my time as a taxidermist, I rather pay a tannery $35 to $50 and get it done .nice and soft.
