It truly depends on where youll be getting the work done. Traditionally the south reflects prices that are less expensive than up north where I am. I assume youre in Fla. You could see heads from $250 through $400 plus easily. and higher, Im sure. Guys down your way often use dry preservative, a powder, in place of tanning. It seems much more acceptable there than here. Up here by me, $300 to $600 is more the range. The old addage goes that you get what you pay for, but Id go look at the mans work regardless of price, and pay for what you like to see.

I pay $525 for a whitetail shoulder mount, which includes the tax. I dont get a plaque or anything like that because I think they look tacky. But my taxi. does great work and I've never had to wait more them 5-6 months.

TXhighrack,

Great bucks! Your taxi does some pretty impressive work. I can see paying that for his work.

I second that. great looking bucks.
in Fl. anywhere from $250.00 up is the range.I have saw some good looking work that run $225.00 without the plaque.
if you go with the petistals like TXhighrack then you gonna add to the price by $100.00 to $150.00 so figure from that.

HUNTER I SUGGEST YOU LISTEN TO BILL YOX .. I HAVE HAD 3 WT DEER MOUNTED HERE LOCALLY BY DIFFERENT GUYS AND THEY AVERAGED ABOUT $350.00 AND I THOUGHT THEY LOOKED GREAT .. BUT THIS PAST YEAR I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO TAKE A VERY NICE BUCK WHILE HUNTING IN ALBERTA ..I CHECKED WITH A TAXIDERMIST IN EDMONTON (BRIAN DOBSON)AND HE TOLD ME $650.00 + SHIPPING AND I ALMOST CHOKEDBUT I THOUGHT ON IT OVER NIGHT AND DECIDED THIS DEER DESERVED THE BEST SO I LEFT HIM THERE .... WHEN I GOT HIM 6 MONTHS LATER I WAS FLOORED AT HOW MUCH NICER HE LOOKED THEN MY OTHERS... I NOW KNOW THERE IS A DIFFERENCE IN JUST A TAXIDERMIST AND AN ARTEST ...THIS DEER LOOKS LIKE IT IS STILL ALIVE ..AND I SHOWED IT WITH OVER 100 OTHER DEER IN GREENSBORO NC AT THE BUCKMASTERS BIG SHOW AND I HAD THREE OF THE DIRECTORS COME TO ME AND TELL ME THAT MY MOUNT WAS THE NICEST ONE IN THE SHOW ... NOT THE BIGGEST DEER BUT THE NICEST MOUNT ... AND THAT JUST GAVE ME A GREATER RESEPECT FOR A GOOD TAXIDERMIST ... IF THE ANIMAL IS WORTH MOUNTING AND YOU CAN AFFORD IT SPEND THE EXTRA MONEY ...ITS WORTH IT.

It is much better to pay extra and get a nice mount than to save a few bucks and get something that just doesn't quite look right. Two good indicators of how good a taxi is --- what does he charge and how backed up is he...the best ones have all the work they need. But the truly best way to tell is to look at some of his/her work!
