Default Pointing dog questions

I am looking for a versatile pointing dog that will live in the house. I am partial to the GSP. What I am looking for is a dog that can hunt with other dogs or by itself. I don't want a pair if I can get away with it.

I also want to teach it to blood trail a deer and not just point. I deer hunt and have the opportunity to hunt quail.

If the GSP is not the way to go...please let me know what breed of pointer is the way to go.

Also, do you find the males or females or more lazy or are they equal hunters?

Thanks

What kinds of birds are you going to hunt?
Are you going to hunt game with fur as well?
Varmint hunting?

I am going to be hunting Bob White, Blues and doves. The only thing with fur that I want him to track is a wounded deer when I call on him to do it.

Thanks

GEEZ ! A Loooosiana boy that doesn't hunt waterfowl? I never heard of such a thing []

Since you live where it's fairly warm, and you're not going to hunt waterfowl of fur, I'd say to go with the GSP.

Doc E,

Before DU started screwing up the fly route patterns, I use to love to duck hunt. But the duck paradise of Louisian has turned into the opposite. You can't buy a duck around here. I deer, dove and quail hunt in Texas and Arkansas now....LOL

Doc,

Do you pick the GSP over the GWP, Viszlas and all the other breeds of pointers? Who has the best hunting stock around my area and also who has the best hunting stock PERIOD.

Thanks

Well I hunt upland birds but mainly pheasant and quail. I also duck hunt and blood track deer with my dog. I have a Drahthaar. Of course I am partial to them, but I would take a kuzhaar (shorthair) in a close second. The one sugestion I would make if you can get a german bred dog and becaome a member of the german group they are from. Each breed has a group in the US. The reason I sugest this is if you become a member you have a tremdous resource at your disposal. The german system has tests for 40 hour blood tracks. most dogs can do a 20 hour blood track but the dog really has to focus for the 40 hour. Here is a link for each group.

www.vdd-gna.org Drahthaar

www.nadkc.org Kuzhaar

Good luck both breeds are great dogs (Drahthaar is better). If you have any questions about them let drop me a line. I have friends that have kuzhaars also.

Man, that's a tough call -- If you were going to do some waterfowling or furry animal hunting, I'd pick the GWP over the GSP (it's hard for a Pointing Lab guy to say that[X(]).

But if you are only going to hunt the animals that you have named, I don't see the need for a more "versatile type" dog. And I'm thinkin' that a GSP will stay cooler in your heat than a GWP.
