Default World Retriever Championships on TV

The World Retriever Championships will be shown on OLN (Outdoor Life Network) this coming Wednesday (April 6) at 9 PM EASTERN time. Check your local time schedule for OLN.

If you are into the Dog Games, you will definitely enjoy the show -- If you haven't participated in Dog Games, you will see why so many of us do.

What is this? Is it a bonfide field trial, a hunt test, or one of those stupid times scored things where the gunner and dog get X points for doing one thing or another?

It's NOT one of the stupid ones that are usually on TV. It's a combination of Field Trial and Hunt Test and Field Test scenarios. The competing dogs are from all three venues as well. It's not at all like teh SRS (Super Retriever Series) like they have on ESPN, where the handlers blow their whistles 87,000 times on a marked retrieve etc.

Watch it and I think you'll be impressed. 200 - 300 - 400 yard marks where the handlers don't blow their whistles even once. Blind retrieves with lots of "factors" lots of good dog work.

The blind retieve that blew most of the dogs out was 289 yards.........75 yards of land before the dog even hit water -- then across a "point" of land which was heavily scented -- then more water -- then across another heavily scented "point" of land then across more water -- then across more land -------- and there was the bird -- same scenario in reverse on the return. This ain't no sport for the faint hearted.

Great competition!
Congrats to Ready, and Alex
After her fail with honda I kinda put her out of the running, but she snuck right in there and won it all!
Nearly all female dogs, is that normal?

Good show, tough competition. It was brought up on RTF they needed diagrams for the viewing audience.

I made it to the 3rd series with one dog. She missed getting called back by 1/2 point. Echo went as far as the 6th series. She was doing real well until the 5th series - Woodies in the Willows - blind. She had good marks on all four birds, but blew me off on the blind. I got called back but we had such a low score after that bad blind, we needed a perfect score in the 6th to continue on.

I had a lot of fun and met a lot of great people. The hunt tests scenarios were so much fun (for me and the dogs) that I think I will run some hunt tests this fall.

Again, the only thing they should have included was a diagram before each series. It was hard to tell from the show the distances and difficulty of each series. And I think they should NOT have included the "chewing out" of one of the handlers - eventhough he was no where to be found 2 out of 3 times. We shouldn't show any negative aspects of our sport!!!
