I have a Jack Russell that I use for hunting pretty much everything, and I can tell you that you don't teach them to hunt...they teach you! The JRTCA has worked hard to preserve the hunting and working qualities of all Jack Russells. My JRT caught his first gopher at only 12 weeks.

Focus on obedience training, and allow the dog's natural abilities to come through. Spend a lot of time teaching the "come" command, and teach it again and again and again. There's nothing worse than watching your dog chase a rabbit or squirrel towards a busy road...and terriers are extremely difficult (if not impossible) to call off game.

Good luck! JRT's are great pets.

Let us know when you get your Jack Russell-I owned one or I should say one owned me for about 10 years and he was a hoot! They are a natural when it comes to hunting small prey. The other advice is absolutely critical and true-you have to master the "come" command if you have any hope of having them work with you-otherwise they are off and running and will never look back.

I have a goldie that would be perfect for you. Last time I took her pheasant hunting, she dug out two rats at once, er mice actually. She spent the rest of the day hunting mice five feet away from me.

Oh, she loves to play with other hunters and she retrieves decoys instead of birds.
