Default saying goodbye to an old friend

had to put my golden down today, she would have been 16 yrs dec. 17, the vet says she thought it was bone cancer, in 3 months she had gone from 65 to 40lbs and was having troulble standing eating and going to the bathroom, i know it was time but it still doesen't make it any easier, btw she was not a working dog, she was always gunshy. but she was a loving and devoted pet and will be dearly missed. i put it off as long as possible but i felt i was being selfish wanting to keep her going and the discomfort she was probably going thru. just wanted to share. enjoy em while there here those years have really flown by.

My sympathy. I used to just do it when it was time for an old dog to go. It gets harder as I get older and yes I too shed some water when the time comes now to lose an old friend. Funny how an animal can get into your heart with those brown or yellow eyes and never have to say a word.

I am sorry for your loss. I had to put down my old 4H dog for my mom a few weeks ago. Even though it is the right thing to do, putting an old friend down when they are sick or in pain doesn't make it any easier. I can understand wanting to keep them close as long as possible. It sounds like you will miss one wonderful dog.

You've reminded me of my old friend that I had to put down about 16 years ago. I cried like a baby then and have tears in my eyes right now just thinking about him. I've tried a couple times since to love another dog, but I can't. Right now I'm dogless and I've said if God only lets me have a good dog such a few years, then I don't want another one. I have to admit that I have been thinking lately about a pup. Maybe it's time...... Jim

We all have our favorites but after God perfected making dogs he created the Golden. I lost my Benny last August to cancer and he was only 3.5 yo. It hurts more than when a person passes on I believe. i think it is because no matter what they never get mad at you and are always there to give you their love. Someone passed this on to me when Benny went to the bridge. You are in my thoughts..

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I have yet to experience that feeling with my big ole boy, and I hate that one day I will have to. I hate that you had to. I cry whenever I think of losing my Buddy, because I know that no dog will ever be able to replace him once he is gone. It isn't much like when a fish in my tank dies, or when you lose a pet rat. Their personalities are so much like that of people, but mostly just good people. I haven't yet met a dog I did not like. I can count on Buddy to make me laugh when I am sad or hurting, and to snuggle with me when I am lonely, and to get excited with me when I am excited about something. I am sorry for your loss. She will never be replaced, but I am sure she will always be remembered. My heart goes out to you. God Bless (you and her, both).
