? ON DALMATIONS

We were talking at work about dog in general and the Dalmation came up. I either heard it or read it somewhere that the Dalmation origanlly was a bird dog. If so was he a retriever or pointer? If so why are they not used much as bird dogs and how did they come to be on fire trucks? Just curious.
