Default Lab for Quail

I was wondering if you could use labs for quail like you use them for pheasent. If so, do they know the quail scent instictivilly, or do you have to train the them to recognize it.

for quail i wouldnt use a lab, but i am sure you can. they could flush too far outta range a pointer will hold em tight.

I have hunted over labs while hunting quail. Most labs will quail hunt naturally some even point this is rare unless bred to do so. Most labs I have hunted with were close working and hunted their butts off. You'll probably never see a lab with as good a nose as a pointer or setter but hunting quail is not uncommon at all.

I have used my lab for quail , he is a pointing lab ( he creeps in if we don't get there fast enough) . Any flushing dog can be used IF it will work close enough . That said a pointer is nicer.

i use my lab to hunt pheasant, chuckar, quail, and goose. my dog hunts at a close range, but she also is a pointing lab, which helps a lot. but in eithor case, it wouldnt make a difference, as long as the dog is trained correctly, and hunts in your distance, there should be no problem in having your lab find quail.
