well ive had Levi for 2 weeks yesterday. got him when he was 5 weeks and he just turned 7 weeks and already almost doubled in size. this is going to be one hell of a dog and he is smart as a whip!!!
at 7 weeks he will sit, stay and come on command by voice, hand signals and with a dog whistle. he is very very good at sit and come, the stay part is a bit rusty but he is getting it slowly.
he sleeps nearly though the night, i only have to get up a cpl times and he goes right back to sleep. he has only made a cpl messes on the floor and i have to say it was my own fault that he did.
9 am very proud of this little guy and i love to watch him develop, although i cant believe how fast he is developing. ill be watching him one day and without warning he will do something that just blows me away. he actually stalks the cats and can anticipate what they are going to do before they do it. he can cut them off at the tree before they get there. LOL
he can be a bit stuborn but i am still very very impressed with this dog as he is still nothing but a baby. i would not be surprised if he is ready to do some hunting come the pheasant opening day. i wont push him but he seems to be guiding me more that i do him. if he is ready it will be great but if not thats fine too. i look forward to getting him around other dogs that hunt once he has all his shots. i want to see how he will pick up what the other dogs know.
thanks to all who have offered help and advice with levi..... we are both grateful
What I would suggest...is get your pup around other pup's as soon as possable. To take a pup away from it's litter at 5 wk's....is way to soon...it's that 7th week with the litter that they learn now to socalize with other dog's...I know....I have a great lab I got at 5 wk's.....and now really have to watch him around other dog's.....corse I never got this advice, till he was about 4 month's....Enjoy your new bud....and let him be a pup for awhile..

WAYNE1 is absolutely correct, he needs to be socialized around other dogs. We recommend that our puppy buyers take their new puppies to a puppy class; in fact we now include gift certificates in our "puppy packet" to encourage them to do so. The puppy class not only teaches the inexperienced people the basic obedience but, more importantly, teaches the puppy how to get along with other dogs of all different sizes and breeds. I've said it before, but we practice what we preach: all 7 of our dogs have been to puppy class even though we have other dogs around because we want to be sure they are OK around dogs of all sizes and breeds.
my concern is that he is not completly up to date on his shots. socializing oportunities are very limited right now becouse of this reason. i do however try to expose him to everything and anything i can including dogs i know are clean and have all the shots
Congratulations on the new pup!! It sounds like you have a champ in the making. It is interesting to read about the socializing of pups with other dogs. Sounds like good advice. I pick up my new shorthait pup tomorrow so I'll make sure I get him around other dogs often. He's just over seven weeks now. Anyway, good luck with your dog!!
I got my pup when he was 13 weeks and he still needs socializing. I get him out to run every day or two. And most of the time just let him run. We do a little yard work here too. But mostly let him be a puppy and discover everything he can get into now so I wont have to go through all of that later. Throughout the years I have worked with puppies it seems they have to have their puppy year. If you get them to where they do well the first year watch out the second. Rush is 6 1/2 months old and I got him on his first pheasant last weekend. Also two quail that he flushed but then had a solid point but couldn't find a bird. The pheasant scared him when it flushed. Oh well he handled somethings pretty well and learned a lot. And had fun, that the most important part right now for him.

Yea, I guess I assumed that shots would be up to date. We tell our puppy people to take their puppy to a class as soon as it has had the rabies vacination.
A bit off the subject, but the other thing we believe strongly in is microchipping for identification. Another one of the things we include in the price of the puppy. Check with your vet if it hasn't been done. Cheap insurance.
