"Heartguard Plus"- Alternative Needed

I started my pup on "Heartguard Plus" last week from a package from the vet. He would not eat it. Spit it out. Broke it up in small pieces and put it in his food, would not eat his food, and he always eats like he's starving. Is there a convient alternative?

try interceptor. it is in a tablet form, that is supposed to be flavored so dogs will eat them, but if they wont it is shaped like a pill, so you can just pop it down his throat if you have to. have your vet show you how to "pill" him. heres how i do it: lick the end of your index finger on your dominant hand, and get the pill to stick to it. then pry his mouth open, and stick the pill as far back in his throat as you can. you will feel him start swallowing. if it doesnt go down then, just get it off the end of your finger (sttill far back in his mouth), then hold his mouth shut with his nose pointed in the air and rub his throat to make him swallow. good luck.

anothr alternative is the 6 month injection proheart 6, although it has recieved alot of bad reviews on this forum. to date our clinic has not had any dogs show a reaction to it, but admittedly we dont use it very often.

Our dogs have NEVER refused a pill when given with peanut butter. It is possible your dog may try to lick the pill clean and leave it, but I have never had a problem.

Thanks, I'll see if my vet carries the Intercepter or other "pill" type. That Heartguard "bar" is the ONLY thing he will not eat.

Ditto on the interceptor. Both of our dogs use it. Sydney happily eats it like a treat, but Gus spits it right out like I just gave him a lump of coal (though Gus would probably eat a lump of coal given the chance!) I just drop it as far back in his throat as I can, then hold his muzzle closed and rub his throat until he swallos. Then I give him a milk bone to wash it down with - works every time. Good Luck!
