I will be picking out my beagle pup from a good breeder in about two months. (Seven weeks after she delivers them) I have been doing alot of reading on beagles, but I also wanted some of your opinions. My dog will be an indoor dog, but I would also like to take it hunting a few times each year. Should I get a male or female? I want to have a close bond, but also be able to housebreak and train. Which is better? Also, when is the best time to get them fixed.
I have had beagles for about 30 years, and all of them have been good hunters. the ones that were the best of all were females.
you can start him or her as soon as you get it,they are never to young to learn.just go slow and be patiance with a pup.
after it is about 4 to 6 mo's. old thy will realy be ready for some real hunting training.
question, why would yor want to have him or her fixed???
once you do that you really have to watch there food, will really get fat.especially if it is a house dog.
once you have that done, you will never have a chance to get offsprings of "your"dog.
good luck with what ever you deside to get.

thanks for the input tree climber, i guess the reason i want to have my dog fixed is because it is going to be an indoor dog. i have heard that females, when in heat, will bleed some which is going to stain whatever i have in the house, also, males will want to urinate more inside the house if they are still able to breed, right? if i'm wrong on these ideas and you think it would be wise not to have them fixed let me know, as of now, i would probably not want any pups.
A female pup would be a good choice for you. Remember to get her out often and give her a chance to 'stretch her legs' as often as you can. She'll start running on her own if you can get her, and keep her, in an area with a few rabbits. Nature will take it's course.
Take care and good luck.
