RE: Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Dog?
It all depends on where you are located.
If your anywhere where you get ice, get either a chessie or a lab. Chessies tend to have more drive, arguably one of the toughest dogs around, but are kind of headstrong. They are loyal and considered a one man dog. I have a chessie and she will retrieve anything that falls, in all conditions, has a good nose for upland and tracking, but took some real time training. Labs are getting so inbred that even the good lines are not that good. I have seen my share of good labs, they tend to train easier, but dont have the drive or toughness of the chessie. I also have seen my share of labs that have been professionally trained and are still dumber than a stick.
If your in the south, a short coated dog and most versatile breeds (see NAVHDA website for list) would do just fine.
The novia scotia is a long haired breed similar to a golden. They are rather rare and are used to lure ducks and geese that are on the water within range by running back and forth making the fowl curious and therefore coming towards it. If your hunting over decoys, the 2 mentioned above would be better for you.
