Default yellow lab i want to get into waterfowl hunting.

My yellow lab is about two, a big playful male named sirius. He is very well trained with basic commands like sit, stay, lie down, ... ect ect ... i was wondering if he is too old to start training for waterfowl hunting. If he isn't, where do i start? With a dog at this age what do i do? Any web sites you reccomend, books, or just personal advice would be wonderful!!!!! Please help me...

Thanks,
Idaho hunter 58

He is definitely not too old to start on waterfowl. It will just take patience. Get a book or tape by Walters or any of the well known trainers. They will take you through it from puppyhood on. Water Dog or Duck dog by walters are some good ones.

Idaho hunter- I had a lab one time. He was about 2 also. I didn't mess him to much, just the basic stuff. Like sit, and lay. That was about it. A friend and I went wooduck hunting, and i took him along just to see what he would do. I learned real quick that don't really worry about shooting to many birds. The best way that I found out was to work with him while i was hunting. Although i still messed with him for about twenty to thirty mins. a day. He did ok. After a couple of months he got the hang of it. He was seeing ducks long before I was, and waiting for them to hit the water. Although woodys are hard to hit (my opinion) he turned out to be a good dog.

I tried working on some blind retrieving yesterday. It was one of the most amazing things i have ever seen. He went side to side across the property and then BAM he found a scent and trailed it to where i had left the scented dummy. Brang it straight back to me. Enough to make you wana cry......
