RE: how many dogs do you got
Since I just sold a young started dog and a young trained dog, I am now down to just four English Setters. One is expecting puppies in a week or two, but someone is already interested in buying her as a trained dog after the pups are weened. That will leave me with three, unless I really like one of the pups. If not, I' ll pick up another pup and start the process of looking for the perfect dog all over again.
Right now, I have one male (4 years old) and three females, one nearly three-years old, one 7 months and one 4 months old. The male is my stud dog and he is the closest thing to perfect I have ever seen and is here to stay. The 7-month-old pup is showing signs she may be what I am looking for and will more than likely be a permanent member of the Seattle English Setters stable. The other pup is too young to evaluate, but she is looking good so far.
What I try to do is to find what I consider the perfect bird dog and then keep and breed these and sell the rest to hunters looking for a class gundog. All the dogs I have had have been good ones in one way or another, but the ones I let go are usually not wide-running enough for me, but that usually makes them perfect for most foot hunters. I usually try to keep between 4 and 6 dogs in my kennel (they mostly live in the house).
