I hope that this does not get out to the manufacturers! I' m sure they will change this some day. Some of you others may have figured this out as well, but I found it to be kinda expensive giving my dogs the tick and flea protection every month, or quarter, depending on which kind you use. The protection I' m talking about is the " Frontline" , " Atvantage" , and all those other types of liquid products that you apply to the dogs neck, between the shoulders and on the back. I get mine at Wal-mart by the way. It is pretty much all the same if you read on the back. Anyway, here' s the secret!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The products come in varying sizes which is indicated by weight. I think there is small, medium, large and horse sized dog (could not remember the largest size). The trick is that it is all the same stuff, meaning the medication is the same percentages. The only thing that changes is that they do not give you as much for the toy dog sizes. I have three goldens. The tubes come in threes. Instead of buying the medium size, which is what my goldens would need as indicated by their weight, and the package of three being all used for the one month of protection, I buy the largest one they sell. It' t the same price. I think it has a picture of a great dane on it. Anyway, after careful consentration, and a calcutation or two, I determined that one of the Extra Large tubes was enough to treat all three of my dogs. Therefore, the package of three lasts me three months. That' s a 66% cost savings!!! The stuff is not cheap to begin with so every bit counts.
Dear Caveman: Be careful on this one. All drip on insecticides for pets is NOT " pretty much the same thing" and " all those other types of liquid" could cause some problems for you and your pet. Frontline@ (fipronil) has a very high safety factor, dogs given 20 times the recommended dose showed only GI signs. Advantage@(imidacloprid) also is very safe and recieving three times the recommended dose would not cause any toxicity. Careful with " all those other types of liquids" Overdosage by permectins and others is not as forgiving. I would only use these products as labeled.
evcvet: you are right, folks should be careful. I would hate myself if someone hurt their dog by something that I recommended. Let me clarify my senerio:
What I should have said is that the " two" products that I was looking at were very close in ingredients and percentages. The fact that I was evenly splitting one large size between three medium sized dogs actually gave them less than the recommended dosage......but seems to work fine (no ticks/fleas).
I am no vet..........just seemed like a logical solution. PLEASE EVERYONE consult with your own vet before doing this.......I did.
