Yesterday, we were going home from a weekend of hunting.
My wife (eagle eye that she is), says, "I think there is a lone goose way out in that field". I stopped and backed up -- I could barely see what she was talking about. I got the binocs out and sure enough, it was a goose.
It was probably 1/4 mile out in the field. With it being a loner, I felt that it must be wounded.
Nami (my wife) got Tucker out, lined him up, "Dead --- Good --- BACK". When Tucker got about 100 yards from the bird, he saw it -- and the bird saw him. When Tucker got about 30 yards from the bird, it started running and flapping it's wings -- it became airborn and Tucker continued the chase. The bird could get about 5' off the ground, but couldn't gain any more altitude. It flew about 100 yards and came down. Tucker caught up to it and it took off again, this time it only flew about 60 yards and came down. It turned toward Tucker with it's wings outstretched, ready for a fight.
Tucker slammed into the bird like a middle linebacker. He grabbed the bird and returned to Nami. Tucker's heart was beating really fast for sure.
We drove around trying to find some hunters who maybe had shot the bird, but we couldn't find anyone, so we kept it.
It was a really nice 10.5 lb bird. I 'dispatched' the bird and we went on home.
When we got home, we saw that the bird only had one pellet in it's breast and the very tip of the wing had been hit with another pellet.
Here's a pic of Tucker and
his bird.
