Default Didn't Shoot -- But Got A Goose

Yesterday, we were going home from a weekend of hunting.
My wife (eagle eye that she is), says, "I think there is a lone goose way out in that field". I stopped and backed up -- I could barely see what she was talking about. I got the binocs out and sure enough, it was a goose.
It was probably 1/4 mile out in the field. With it being a loner, I felt that it must be wounded.
Nami (my wife) got Tucker out, lined him up, "Dead --- Good --- BACK". When Tucker got about 100 yards from the bird, he saw it -- and the bird saw him. When Tucker got about 30 yards from the bird, it started running and flapping it's wings -- it became airborn and Tucker continued the chase. The bird could get about 5' off the ground, but couldn't gain any more altitude. It flew about 100 yards and came down. Tucker caught up to it and it took off again, this time it only flew about 60 yards and came down. It turned toward Tucker with it's wings outstretched, ready for a fight.
Tucker slammed into the bird like a middle linebacker. He grabbed the bird and returned to Nami. Tucker's heart was beating really fast for sure.
We drove around trying to find some hunters who maybe had shot the bird, but we couldn't find anyone, so we kept it.
It was a really nice 10.5 lb bird. I 'dispatched' the bird and we went on home.
When we got home, we saw that the bird only had one pellet in it's breast and the very tip of the wing had been hit with another pellet.

Here's a pic of Tucker and his bird.

Good deal Doc!!,

Does that mess Tucker up when bird hunting once he has caught a live bird ? I know one of my setters caught a couple of small birds and I had my work cut out getting him to stay on point rather than trying to sneak up and grab the bird.. So just asking that is all...

For as far as geese go I only tried 2 of them years ago when I used to hunt for them.. I do not think they were cooked right or something as I couldn't aquire a taste for them..

You did a good thing for that bird. It was suffering, because of some one else's piss poor shooting skills.

Phil,
I cannot speak for Tucker, but with my pointing lab, it has no effect on his point after retreiving a live bird that is crippled.

1. Not at all -- same with my old dog Casey. Proper cues are teh answer. "Dead --- Good --- BACK" on blinds (live or dead) as compared to "Smell for birds" doing Upland.

2. My Korean wife is an amazing cook. She cut the meat into pieces that equalled about 1 to 3 bites, marinated them and then beer battered them and deep fried in Olive Oil.
She has cooked geese (all game birds that we shoot) many different ways, and they're all delicious.

Thanks Doc, The goose looks good like that.. I had it cooked like a turkey just couldn't get to like the taste of it like that..

I am glad it does not bother your dog none at all. On my Irish I have to work on h9im if he catches a bird on his own. He will try to sneak and that leaves me working on his holding skills again..

It does not bother my Irish either after a gun shot has been made. It does without the gun being shot though.. I think it makes him think he do ok without me shooting or something..
