Default teaching "drive" in my lab pup

Ive got a lab pup that just turned 4 months old and am training him to find shed antlers. I m needing to know how to teach him to get out and hunt on his own instead of just following me around. He is retrieving horns really well and using his nose as well as sight to locate them. I've tried to train others and all they would do was follow me around or walk under my feet. I don't want to make the same mistake with this guy because he is showing so much promise. any ideas?

You pup is a puppy, he will venture out on his own when he learn more. One thing you could do, it take him on a walk in some fields, woods, and do not say a thing to him, let him explore his world, I do this with my pup who will be 5 months in a week,a nd he is starting to get further out front.
