Before I even ask, dont get upset about the questions... I am just honestly trying to get educated about the whole deal so my opinion isnt as negative about it as it is right now due to some bad experiences the past couple years. Maybe I've just had too many run-ins with slob hunting, I dont know..
In my dozen or so run-ins with deer dogs, why are the ribs always showing and they look so mal-nourished? I have never been around other sporting dogs(retrievers, bird dogs) that look that way.
In most other forms of dog hunting, it seems the hunters are able to keep the dogs in check because of close proximity(except in coon or bear hunting). In states where hunters DONT run deer with dogs but use dogs for OTHER forms of hunting I dont really hear people complain about hunting dogs or hunting with dogs. I guess my biggest thing is this; What about the guy who has 500 acres of land, spends 100s of hours and thousands of dollars creating ideal deer habitat only to have dogs run across the land numerous times ruining stand hunts and the conditions he has invested in? What can the guy do about it? In all honesty is it fair to him? Yeah there is RTR but hunting that way does NOT shed good light on the sport.
How much does it cost to raise/feed/train 10-20 dogs, buy a truck box, cb radio, tracking devices, etc? It just seems to me there is an awfule lot of time/money put into when deer can be hunted VERY effectively without dogs. I might be wrong tho. Is it true that hunt clubs run radios on illegal frequencies? If so why?
When it comes the actual hunting aspect, are the deer always moving when being shot? I have have tried to stop deer ran by dogs on a few occasions with no luck, so Im guessing theyre being shot on the move? Many times I hear multiple gunshots(5-10) from various weapons. That means that they are either 1)missing or 2) filling the deer full of holes. I guess if youre truly starving thats a way to get meat but my gut feeling is these guys get off on the excitement of killing anything.
Do deer dog associations regularly encourage hunting clubs encouraging hunters to not be slob hunters? It would be a great idea if they did. If a deer dog association knew that a hunt club was slob hunting would they keep "hush hush" or realize that that form of hunting sheds bad light on all hunters? Who knows, maybe I need to go hunting with a club sometime and experience it first hand?
