labs are very smart.teach SIT,STAY,NO,DROP IT,BACK and have fun.
they love water and woods too.make sure you let people handle your dog under your supervision. never alone with kids,NEVER....
get dog around other dogs but be there every minute .
get dog around noises like cars/people/guns etc.

BUT DO IT SLOWLY .i took toby out in lightning, pouring down rain, high winds, blizzards, walking in dark deep in woods with coyotes calling.he even rode ice burgs in river when he was 9 months old. i could not keep him out of river and water was 5 degrees.
he is afraid of NOTHING.

i feel for me BOOKS are waste.if its not DVD type thing, i dont want it.i like the dvd he has .that is all i would use.
never studied in school and hate reading.all we did was get out of school as quick as we could and go hunting with our dogs, day in day out.

Default dog.....

I did the basics with my chocolate lab as a pup......had him on birds and wings at 8 weeks......Sent him to a pro at 7 months for 2 months. That has been the best investment of my hunting career!!!!! HE is a polished dog ready for the season. I will do it all over when I start a new dog.

I used two books, but one has to do with Pointing labs, the other was/is called the Water dog. I think Doc E has a good suggestion as I have heard good things about that DVD.

Sproulman, You are going to get someone to make that DVD one way or the other aren't you? :-)
