Default Coon Dog Breed help

ok im new to coon hunting but i went quite a few times and i seem to enjoy it and i was looking to get one so so i could do it on my own so i was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of what type of breeds to consider getting or what breeds perform better than others or anything else that would help me make a decision on what breed to get.

thanks Ny,

well it just depends on what you like
i like mtn curs for some woods they are not a deep running alot of time they wont get more than 100 yards from you and there silent on the track only opening there mouth on the tree plus if you like squirrel hunting they are great at that as well you can run tree rats all day and coons all night. then moving in to the hounds i like blue ticks for the reason of that's the first dog i ever hunted with also Ive hunted with walkers and had good luck with them right now I'm training 2 pups that i got for free there half black and tan and half red tick and show alot of promise remember papers and a big price tag don't mean a dog is going to hunt just look around find a dog that fits you and that you like. go to www.coondawgs.com and look around they will help you out alot and that's where i got my free dogs from good luck and have fun

I've hunted just about every breed as well. There is no right or wrong answer here. The main thing is just finding a good dog. coondawgs.com is a great website. I've hunted Walkers mainly and have had some great dogs. With Walkers I've had some that would hunt until they hit a track a mile away. Then I've had others that would hunt a 200 yard circle around you and come back if they didn't hit a track. Those type are my favorites. Good luck finding you a good hound and there is nothing better than the sound of a running hound on a cold crisp autumn night.

walkers and blueticks are most popular so they might be easier to find, not saying plotts, mnt. cur, english, redbone and black n tan are not in your area. But if this is your 1st coonhound start off with a dog that can run and tree a coon by itself. Get familiar with the sport even better before you start training young dogs, if you start off with just a pup you are definately going to swear and get fustrated. But find something that you can run a couple times before you buy it. A good started dog might run between 500-1500 but if you buy pups at 200-300 a piece and screw up 5 of them (not saying you will but it happens) well...

I would check with the person you have been hunting with, and see what he has been using. Also, try to get in contact with other people in your area, and see what is working. If you are only planning on hunting coon, then breed and strain are not particularly important. When you start getting into wanting to hunt bears, lions, bobcats, etc, then I think you get into people that have dogs that may fit a particular need more specifically.

Good luck, and I hope you do well!

Hound dogs are an addiction like no other!

Later,

Marcial
