Exclamation Found Dogs...

Ok guys- Your traveling home one night- dog on the road, middle of nowhere, but not REAL far from homes. Beautiful cur dog that seems to be dropped off. Checking the vacinity, this dog doesnt belong to anyone in the area. Hes great, and we would love to keep him. No collar, and no tattoos, and he jumped in the vehicle with little prompting. What are yalls thoughts on this- say the 'owner' comes by and claims it's his- when does a found dog (not a deer or coon hound) become yours, and just how do you turn the claimant away, should they arrive?

IMO, if found with no collar take it home and put in ad in your newspaper/craigslist for 2weeks and list where he was found (don't list specific details like color) list your # and have them ID the dog name, color, etc. Helps to check if the person is legit if you have a white dog and he says its black that tells ya something

P.S.

You can also take him to an animal shelter/vet and see if they can scan his microchip. (if he has one)

Pick-up the dog. Have him checked for a micro chip. Got none, then advertise for about 2 weeks, forcing the "owner" to describe (look for some unique mark, scar, etc.) the dog in detail. No one shows ... keep the pooch.

X-2. Also try a few flyers where you found the dog. Try everything to find original owners first. Might be a little kid missing there favorite pooch.
