Default Lab for deer tracking.

Hi, we got an 8 week lab puupy for a family pet. I was wondering if any of you would have some advice on how this dog would do in deer tracking. I am an avid bowhunter and I just thought that it would be a good idea if I could train this dog to trial a wounded deer just in case I was unable to recover the animal. Thank You

Check your state hunting regulations cause that is illegal in some states.

As hunters we must use all means available to find wounded game so that they are not lost or suffer. What would be the problem using a certified blood tracking dog, trained using the V.D.D. criteria.

I see nothing wrong with it myself. Like you, I hate to see precious game wasted or suffering. However, you will also have those folks that use that " certified tracking dog" to track game that is " not wounded" !

caveman : thanks for bringing me back to reality, the type of people that you described ruin it for the majority, just like " no tresspassing" signs, all it does is keep the honest hunter out.

If needed, I would use any dogs to help track a wounded deer.

If a deer is wounded the dog will be following the blood trail. That should come instinctively.
