Default HELP ! Large litter of new puppies .... ??

My dog had her first litter of puppies two nights ago. Shes a Corgi, and she had 11 puppies (1 was still born). So we have 10 puppies and I seriously wonder if she can feed them all well enough. We keep them in my closet, warm enough, and 3-4 are already a smaller than the others. What we are now doing is letting her out for a while, then when we put her back with the puppies, we let the 4 smallest be with her for 30-45 minutes, thinking this will help them out until we can get them to bottle feed well (they aren' t too responsive to it so far)/

Any helpful tips from anyone ? I don' t want to lose any of these puppies.

I just had a golden have 9 pups.........all survived with no problems. They did put a bit of a strain on her and I got them on puppy food a little earlier than recommended. Just keep giving her plenty of good food. I fed my bitch a can of tuna fish or salmon for the first few days and here and there afterwards and gave her calcium supplements everyday along with all the purina dog chow she wanted.

Talk to your vet. I' m sure they can tell you exactly what you need to do.

Good Luck..........what is a Corgi anyway?

If I had any questions or concerns, I would contact my local vet for direction. One phone call could go a long way in answering your questions......Good Luck!.....Jimmy S

Hntngirl,

That IS alot of pups for that little dog. I felt bad for my golden feeding all 9 of those little mouths and even more when they got big enough to follow her around everywhere. Make sure you have somewhere the bitch can get away from them when she wants to. My two kids sometimes drive me crazy, I could not emagine 9 or 10 chasing me around all the time!

Does the corgi breed hunt or is it just a lap dog breed?

The Corgi is a herding dog ... the stock she' s from is active cattle dogs and you can see it in that she likes to heard my kids around the back yard ! Very intelligent dogs, very obedient, great with kids. I couldn' t ask for a better dog.

Shes a very large corgi - about 4-6" longer and a bit taller than the male I bred her to. Her breeding weight was 29 pounds, and she was lean and in excellent condition (most female corgi' s weight like 20-22 pounds)

Anyway, the pups are doing good. Rotating the smallers one for first dibs on milk is working well I think. The vet said they all look healthy to her.

Where did the black come from? I thought the Welsh Corgi' s where all fawn and the Cardiagan' s could be black.

The female i have is a classic red/white, just about perfect markings/blaze ... the male was kinda like a red headed tri colored/sable

Cool site, haven' t viewed that one before. We were told that the puppies brownish coats will turn red eventually as well.
