In my opinion purina is overrated. I started feeding my pointers red flannel about 6 months ago and am very happy.
I did an experiment the first of the year. I fed dogs seperate to make sure they were getting the recomended amount. I fed purina 1 puppy and pedigree puppy to two pups from the same litter. After 6 weeks the pup on purina 1 puppy looked horrible, the one on pedigee looked good. Switched both pups to pedigree and in another 6 weeks they both looked good and healthy.
I think you are going to be fine getting away from purina

I've seen it but have yet to try it. Pretty happy with Canidae. The Blue Buffalo is rated very highly and looks really healthy...don't know what it costs.

Here's a review: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/showproduct.php?product=1328&cat=8

My PP was weaned onto Purina ProPlan Puppy and it took me less than a week after I got her at 9 weeksto start the conversion over to Canidae. What I don't like about any of the Purinas is the amount of corn and unnecessary by-products in the food. IMO...if meat isn't the top or one of the top two ingredients, you can do better. The problem with a lot of people is that they may have several dogs and can't afford what I would consider a higher end food with that many mouths to feed.

With that said, you will get people coming out of the woodwork that have probably been Purina fans forever...nothing wrong with that either. Just not for me...or I should say, us.

From the website I would sayBuffalois a better than average feed. With all due respect to BD, Pedigree is is a bottom shelf feed. Though I do agree Purina is overrated.

purina 1 is also cheep walmart food, just like pedigree.Birddog3412Red flannel was recalled august 2007 for salmonella, and gets its protein from chicken by product meal. purina pro plan 1st ingredent is chicken. I just tried purina pro plans select series, turkey and barley dogs love it, select is a step up from the regular pro plan, google it and see for yourself. Blue buffalo and canidae seem to be top of the line foods from checking the web sights. Been feeding pro plan for about six years now, very happy with it, just going to move on to proplan select and loose all the corn and wheat.

brkn arrow, guess you are right about the red flannel. But about all dog food companys have had recalls at one time or another. Have you seen the Diamond natual extreme athlete. It appear really good also. I talked to one guy who has a kennel of around 100 pointers, he has been feeding it. swears he has all of his adult dogs cut back to 1 cup a day and they look great. that was back in august when he told me that, so i am sure the dogs were not being pushed very hard.

What is the price on the pro plan select

When I went out looking for a new food for my Lab, he is allergic to Wheat products, and he was eating Purina one large puppy. I went looking at lables, there are a few brands I will not look at, and will not go into that here, but the Blue Diamond and Royal Canin were my two choices I ended up with, I chose Royal Canin large breed puppy and he is now on Royal Canin Labrador 30 and doing great.

His treats are Blue Diamond treats, as they have no Wheat in them.
