All dogs are different. Some lines start early, others won't start until after a year. That being said, you can have the exception to the rule either way.

Does your beagle come from hunting lines? How often are you taking him out? Are you putting him on fresh rabbit tracks?

You can try a couple of things here... you can take him to a starting pen and have someone work with him every day (usually costs between $80-$100 for a month of training), or you can try taking the dog out with another one that is already running. What you are doing doesn't seemt to be working for whatever reason.

Go over to http://americanbeagler.huntingboards.comand register. You will get a lot of help, maybe more than you want.

If you post where you live or at least what state you are in, I might be able to find you a starting pen relatively close by...

most of beagles i had would hunt rabbits at 9 months old..
some dogs will not hunt with other dogs so thats not always a good thing..

secret is,sproulmans secret..take rechargeable light, 1 of those 1 million ones, go to place that has rabbits where you cant hunt them, i used high school where i live, take light and put it on the rabbit at night, then slowly walk with your dog until he sees rabbit and smells it..

this will get him excited to hunt rabbits..

i did this with our labs and have great rabbit labs..

secret is getting dog around rabbits and at night, there are a lot out..

also, put a bell on your dogs collar so you can hear him in brush after rabbit in dark..

i have not lost beagle this way..

I know of 2-3 rabbit pens in my hometown of Perry, Florida (50miles south of Tally). I have 5-6 deer dogsthat were started out as young puppies in rabbit pens.

I know the guy in the earlier post also in Mayo,Fl. You are aware that if the dog is catching the rabbits, most rabbit pen owners won't put the dog in the pen? Give me a reply if you need some phone numbers.
