I might be crazy but, I leave the water and food dish full all day and they eat what they want. I haven't had any problems like with this either. If I am taking them out hunting I will wait until I get back to feed them.

How old are you talking about when you say "pup"?
Once you are off of a "little puppy schedule" of 3 or 4 feedings a day, you should feed two times a day about 12 hours apart.

There are problems with "Free Choice" feeding. In a very large (14 year long)study done by Purina, it was found that free choice feeding resulted in a shorter life expectancy, increased rate of arthritis, increased rate of gastric volvulous ("twisted gut"). One feeding per day also resulted in a greater incidence of Gastric Volvulous (twisted gut).
Another possible problem is that if your dog gets sick and goes "off feed" it can be very difficult to tell.

It takes a dog 12 to 16 hours to fully digest a meal.

hes 10 weeks old.. right now theres jus a bowl of food out. i know that isnt the correct thing to do thats why i am askin how often i should feed him...prolly another dumb question but does this sound normal in young dogs he'll go to the door when he has to go outside but he jus wont wait. i mean its seems like he thinks in front of the door is good enough. wont give ya 10 seconds to put shoes on.. normal?
