RE: how staunch is to staunch
This is an excellent post. In another forum there are different views on this comming from some very experienced dog people. This is a breakdown of the discussion.
A dog trained to hunt should follow a running bird. Better yet, encircle it preventing the bird from running further or towards you. Basically, pinning the bird. It should stay far enough away that it won't spook the bird as if it runs too close, it will look like bumping.
In field trials, I believe, don't want the dog to move period. I think planted birds play a big part vs. wild birds.
In the club I belong to, this particular subject came up as we were trying to find a format for our club trials.
