Default Weird fetch

been playinga little bit of fetch with the pup i've just been useing a sock with a knot in it right now i get her real worked up with it then give it a toss.....she goes after it but creepsreal slowto it almost like a catand then when she gets about a foot away she jumps on it [:-]is there a reason she isnt just busting out after it from the start or is this kinda normal??

thanks

I wouldn't worry about it.

Well, while your working her up and flopping it around and then it flies out of your hand she is thinking this thing is alive, and is moving slowly to see what it's going to do. Then pounces before it does anything , since it's only a pup she is not hunting dead.

Wondering if your lab is from PL lines. That creeping or lack thereof is what gets reinforced for pointing breeds. I have a goldie that never creeped or catwalk. If she wanted something, she just ran and got it or chased but never stalked. But that could be just her. I've seen german shepards, austrailian herding x-breeds, etc. that also stalked, usually my dog but I've never seen them stalk as much as my dog. It usually ends in a stareoff as my dog will stalk back.

Try this, do the same thing as what was discussed before, but now do different lengths, like 5ft, 8ft, 10ft, don't restrain no more, if you have been, as soon as sock hits the ground, let it go, you can still say th ename, for the que, but don't hold back. If its coming here pretty good, go outside, change the view, do not have anything out to distract it, just you and the dog. If it farts around on coming back in, turn and walk the oppisite way, so if dog is coming to you south, you turn and walk south, it will try and catch up, thinks you are leaving. Ya follow?? Thanks Jonesy

Try using a ball of some sort. Tennis ball that size or similar. A pup will always chase a moving object. She wont creep behind it because the ball will out run her.
