chihuahua/Datson Mix Hunting Dog?

Hey guys hows it going. I have a chihuahua/datson mix male named Gus. He's about a year and a half and pretty much all he is good for is barking at the neighbors and begging for food. Is it possible to train dogs like these to be hunting dogs? I know is is pretty small (about 18 lbs) but he may still be able to smell birds and chase upland game skyward. I know he isnt big enough to retreive anything. Any ideas?
