I would suggest taking him out with the other dogs. Really depending on his age. If he's still young use a coon hide. Let him chew on it a while and lay down a trail. But we've always had better luck letting them learn from the older dogs.

im not a coon hunter but i have rasied beagles and have done lots of reaserch on trainig. Here is what ive learned. First off as cutter81 said letting him run with another coon hound is the best and easiest way. Check your hunters manual and see when you can take him out with another dog. Next get a hide. Just grab a fresh road kill. or trap one. Go to www.huntsmart.comand you will find most of your coon dog needs. Check out a role cage. Just get a liscens for a pet coon and put him in the cage for the dog to chase.you can also buy coon urine and put it on a drag. I havet tried this method but they say if you put your dog with the game you want it to chase as a pup then it will eventually hunt it. But you should try to drag around the hide drag or coon in a bag so your dog can follow it. Once the dog does track you have to keep practicing him so he gets better ansd smarter. He should learn the rest on his own, but just remember not all dogs will hunt. it is common to get a pot licker. You wont know thias for shure untill he around a year old which is when all of my dogs opened up for the first time.
