Default Bear in the area!!

We are seeing more and more bear in the area, Southhampton VA. While bow hunting getting to a stand in the pitch black, what should you do if you come up on a bear. I have never even thought about it until this year. When it is gun season I feel alot better carring a gun but bow hunting it is me and my bow. Just alittle uneasy. Maybe a dumb question, but do bear sleep at night?

Hmmm.... I'm not sure. I've seen bears when I lived up in the Adirondack Mts in upstate NY back in the 70's, but none here in Virginia. I carry my Taurus 85 .38sp snubby with me when I'm in the woods (I have a CWP and carry during bowseason, which is a nice bonus), because you never know what's out there.

If its legal to pack while bowhunting in bear country, I'd be packing a magnum caliber pistol(44cal minimum). No offense to Butch, but I wouldn't want to face a charging bear with only a .38 special. If packing is not legal, I've heard pepper spray can also be used to deter a bear. I'd post this question in the "north" region and see what they have to say.

I watch quite a few bears right from my back porch and believe me as soon as they get a whif of a human, they're gone...history...see ya later. They especially like pizza---doesn't matter what kind of toppings..... They only problem I feel you would have is if you happened upon a sow with cubs.....and unless the wind was really wrong...the sow would pick up your scent and heard the little ones away from you. I worry more about cougars than anything else. They're 100% killer and 100% stalker. For that reason I pack a .357 mag in a shoulder holster under my charcole suit just in case. Even if it's illigal where you live to pack heat, noone can tell you have the pistol on you in the shoulder holster. Check out ebay and you can pick one up pretty cheap...I paid $12.50 for a real nice all leather with leather straps. Hope this helps you feel a little safer out there bow hunting....

I would think that they would stay clear, but in the back of my mind I do not want to run in to one. Thanks, my mind is put at ease a bit.
