I'm taking Friday off (still have 8 days vacation left to use...) and going hunting with my bow. I've been all over Cumberland SF and heavily hunted my "special little spot". I'm wondering about giving the spot a rest and trying another area for something different.
In the new edition of Virginia Game & Fish, on page 21, they have the big deer forecast for 2004. There are more deer per square mile in Powhatan than in Cumberland. There are more deer per square mile in Powhatan than anywhere in the piedmont section! [8D] Last year it says there were 7.01 bucks harvested per square mile in Powhatan alone! Wow.... Cumberland SF isn't even listed on the chart though. [:-]
Virginia's deer counties (deer per square mile) are ranked like this:
1) Loudoun............(10.03)
2) York..................(8.83)
3) Bedford.............(7.11)
4) Powhatan...........(7.01)
5) Clarke...............(6.60)
6) Frederick...........(6.60)
7) Shenandoah.......(6.52)
8) Fauqier..............(6.46)
9) James City.........(6.18)
10) Rappahannock..(5.81)
11) Charles City.....(5.48)
12) New Kent.........(5.35)
13) Prince William...(5.31)
14) Roanoke..........(5.29)
15) Lancaster.........(5.10)
16) Botetourt.........(5.09)
17) King George.....(4.96)
18) Culpeper..........(4.82)
19) Franklin............(4.73)
20) Rockingham......(4.72)
I don't know, I guess I am thinking about the saying, "ya gotta go where the deer are". So, I am thinking of trying Powhatan WMA tomorrow and giving Cumberland SF a rest. When the rut kicks in, I will be out there hard and heavy giving it everything I got!
Anyway, anyone want to go hunting tomorrow? Zing me a PM or call me.
