Default Dog trainiing

What would be the best way for a fellow to train his pups how to coon hunt. The classic method or the modern method.

What are the classic and modern methods?

I start them out with trained dogs. Also the 'at-home'work with coon hides and such. For stubborn dogs, I use a shock collar.
