Default Quantico Hunters???

I was wondering if any of you on here hunt or have hunted on Quantico?? It is only a mere few minutes from my house and have heard both good and bad about it. I was thinking more along the lines of hunting mainside only. Are there alot of hunters on mainside? Any ideas to point my in the right direction if I decide to hunt mainside. I am going to go qualify next saturday to hunt mainside.

I have heard alot of you talk about the HIll and Belvoir but not too many about quantico, so any imput would be awsome!

Hey Eng40sqd,

I hunt Quantico, I was there friday one of the hunters bagged a 8 pt field dressed at 151 lbs.

Most of the kills so far came from areas west of 95 17b, 5b, 7a the buck I just mentioned came from 17b.

As for mainside yes you have to qualify, too many hunters for me attempting to gain access to mainside so I hunt the other areas. I jumped a 4 pointer entering my stand yesterday morning and two does just my bad luck.

Good luck with your qualification!

VaSavage270.. are there really that many people trying to get on mainside?? I did not think that many people would be tryign to get over there once regular gun season opened. I figured most people woudl hanng their bows up and pick up their guns, so my theroy was when gun season opened that mainsdie would not get much pressure? Am I incorrect in my thinking, like I said I have never hunted qauntico at all so I dont know.

Eng40sqd,

There are many avid bow hunters on base, yes the thought of gun season would have many retire the bow. However with the pressure of gun season most hunters will stay on mainside until the later part from my experiences hunting quantico.

Belvoir is bow only, All season and this year season goes to March 27th, Belvoir is all I hunt with the Hill thrown in a few days for smoke pole hunting. I worked for the hunting program for 9 years at Belvoir. Just took my boss out for the first time in 4 years layoff from bow hunting and he sat 50 yards from me and shot 1 at 5:20 pm and another at 6:00 pm. If you want any info on Belvoir, let me know, I will try to give you any advise I can.~Ben

What vasavage said is correct. There are a lot of hunters at Quantico, and many bowhunt all season. In theory, you are correct in your thinking, but I believe a lot of people think that too. If it' s right around the corner from you, I' d definitely recommend hunting there.

Yes, I agree with Ben belvoir is the place to be if your strickly looking to bow hunt only. If you are to qualify I' d say go for belvoir however if Quantico is closer then that would be a better choice in either way they are not far apart I' m between the two just my luck..lol But I never hunted belvoir.

My Bother in-law was stationed there for many years just retired in September, and you can walk into deer at just about any time..persay. I know I' ve counted my share of them.

Oh by the way a month or so ago I mentioned this area near the house a lil parcel of land that' s holding about 4 bucks biggest a 6 no doubt!, well I finally got into the woods of that area and mannnnnnnnnnnnn it' s tore up with rubs, scrapes etc. I' m no set up on a nice path of their travel. So far I' ve seen the smaller ones but not within bow range as of yet, hopes are high though. I seen him standing on the edge of the proprty with no worries other night pretty I must say already had him mounted...lmao in mind of course. Someone told me there' s an 8 there as well I haven' t seen him yet.

Ben.. I am planning on going up to base on Sunday The 9th to take my IBEP class so I can hunt up there on Belvoir!!! I would love some info such as what else am I going to need to do to be able to hunt and some of the basics for the base... I had thought about going up there earlier this year but after glancing at some of the do this and dont do thats, and after hearing from a few people that is was a big" inside" base..meanign that if you were not part of the " group" that you were ont treated equally.. that sort of made me shy of it. But you seem to be very willing to help and I figured I would not know for sure until I tried for myself!!

Justin

Justin,

Just remember it is that way at any place. I will say this, unlike Quantico you can never be bumped out of a slot due to " rank" . Once you have signed up for a slot(Area) to hunt, well that is your slot, NO Military preferance to any hunting area on the entire base. PERIOD!!!!!!

There are guys that will try to give you advice but I will tell you this, be careful they are more than likely just going to lead you away from where they are hunting. I know that place like the back of my hand, I will not nor would I ever stick you in a spot where I am seeing Monster bucks, but I will go in and set you 50 to 75 yards from me to ensure you shoot a deer. I will give you any info I have obtained for you to get a shot at a deer, if a moster walks to ya, well good for you, you never know what will show up when hunting on Belvoir.

I am gonna toot my own horn for a second also, ask down at Outdoor rec for info or ask the staff there whom you should talk to about where to go, I would bet my name is mentioned.

Let me know.~ Ben
