Default Acorns in Texas

Any reports from Texas hunters on acorns this year? We already have a bunch on the ground in Hamilton County and the deer are not hitting the feeders until the evening. I was wondering if this is a good thing? Someone told me that when the acorns drop early they are all rotten by the time gun season rolls around. Any truth to that?

I' m hunting East Texas this year and we too are already seeing acorns on the ground. Could make the hunting tougher if you hunt over a feeder. I think most of them get eaten before gun season except for some of the late droppers.

I used to hunt Lampasas/Coryel county and would love to get back down in that part of the country. Any suggestions on how to find a lease in the area. There are 7 of us in our group.

Thnaks.

havent heard much of the acorns yet. although they seem to always still be on the ground by the time rifle season starts, at least on our palce in Coleman county. but goin by the deercam pics we ve been getting, they are hitting the feeders hard. Will know more for sure in about 2 weeks when bow season starts

Mike,
Two years ago I signed up for some online lease finder network and it was great. Basically, some guy who managed oil properties also asked owners if they wanted to run their info through him for hunting leases. I think it was called huntingpages.com or something like that. It was 99% Texas stuff, and there was always around 15-20 new leases per week in the Lampasas/Mills/San Saba/Hamilton area. It cost me like $20 buck for 6 months.

I am on a great place, but it isn' t cheap for me. The 1600 acre place has 15 hunters at $1250 a gun. However, it has been game managed for 6 years and is on the Vista Mountain Co-op. As a member of the co-op, we get tons of extra cull buck and doe tags. Additionally, we get to start gun hunting early (2nd week in Oct.). We have seen some excellent bucks this year (up to 145 class), and this is without any protein feeding yet. Our average deer taken last year ranged in the mid 120' s with two scoring over 135. Tons of deer, dove, quail, and turkey. I would recomend the area to anyone. Hope this helps!
