RE: Falls-Butner
I used to hunt the old Butner Game land, back before it became known as Butner-Falls Game land. When the National Guard took back over most of the old Butner Game Land, they acquired some more land back toward I-85, and changed the name of what was left of the old Butner Game Land and the newly acquired land, to Butner-Falls Game Land. This all took place back around 1988 or so.
I have not hunted the Game land since about 1984, back when it was Butner Game land. It was not due to any confrontations, fights, being shot at, or any other dangerous situations. I never saw any of those kind of things, and I started hunting that old game land with my father in 1974, when I was 10 years old. The reason I stopped hunting it back in the mid 1980' s was that it did indeed become too crowded and over hunted.
Fast forward a few years later, say 1992 I started hunting the National Guard land. Entry was (and is still) by permit only. The NC National Guard Training Center has about 5,000 acres, but only about 2,000 to 2,500 can be hunted. Some is bow hunting only and the rest is bow and gun. Permits must be applied for in person at the Range Control Headquarters on Roberts Chapel Rd, just off Range Rd. Cost of permits was $10, may have gone up this, don' t know yet as I haven' t gone to get mine yet. Last year there were only about 150 permits issued. All hunters must sign in and out of the National Guard land, at the same Range Control Headquarters. There is no vehicle access allowed of any kind, so to get into the land is only by foot (which not many hunters now days are willing to do, at least to any distances), all NC hunting regulations and laws apply (plus a few military reg' s and such as well), dogs are prohibited, permanent typoe tree stands are prohibited, etc.
It is worth checking out, you may like what you see on the National Guard Training Site.
