Default Phelps WMA Virginia

Anyone planning on hunting the Phelps WMA this Saturday for opening day of modern firearms? I was at the Thompson WMA this past Saturday, but for grouse.

Yeah, I think tomorrow is buck only. I can't decide whether the Phelps or the Thompson would be better.

Don't know about Phelps, but Thompson can be a shooting gallery on opening day. If you go, think about hitting an area that is away from the main kiosks.

Good advice Steve. The Amelia might be a better choice, but the Phelps is a bit off the beaten path and back there.

Some of the smaller tracts of the Rapidan would be a good option as well, either the Fletcher or Kirtley Mountain.

The Phelps was overrun on Saturday Steve. I want to hit the Amelia and the Highland next month for the two Saturdays that I can and I'm in town while the season is still open. Better luck next time

Amelia WMA? I can sum that place up with only three letters: O...M...G...

Dude, seriously, there is so much blaze orange at Amelia, the place looks like a freakin' overgrown pumpkin patch!!! Trust me... AVOID Amelia, Powhatan, Phelps, Chickahominy, etc... on a Saturday. Try to take a day off work during the middle of the week, and you'll find that it's a lot better.

Been there, done that....

Edit: Even though I'm in Richmond, I now take the 2 - 2.5 hour drive out to the other side of the Blue Ridge, out into the George Washington Nat'l Forest. It's peaceful out there, and not so many people. I've been so far in the GWNF a few times, I felt like I had all 1.8 million acres all to myself!
