Default Great Pee Dee River Heritage Preserve

I'm planning to go hog hunting up there this weekend. I was just wondering if any of you have hunted there before? Is this a place where someone could easily get lost and will I need a GPS if I plan to go roaming around?

Thanks!

I went up there last year one day.I didn't see anything, but my friend got 1. He's going this weekend also.

Yes, you can get lost if you stray too far from the roads and rivers.

Thanks! I went and bought a GPS yesterday so I can plot my waypoints while I'm roaming around.

Yes it is very easy to get lost. There are a lot of creeks that you can not cross so you might walk 500 yards into the woods only to have to turn around and walk right back out.

I would also take a compass because it's pretty thick. GPS might not work well in some areas.

Well..............did you get lost?
Did you shoot anything?
My friends boy got a shot at one on Thursday, but they came home emptyhanded today.

Sorry for the late response... Nope, I didn't shoot anything. I got there Friday evening just to take a look around and see where I wanted to start. I saw a nice buck on the other side of the river but all I could do was admire him. There were trucks all over the place. I was the first one there the next day and shortly afterward about 12 trucks came through. I didn't even see any sign that hogs were in the area.

And the DNR needs to seriously take a look at their scheduling. They have the Special Still Gun Hog Hunt scheduled right in the middle of small game season. So you have guys running dogs after squirrels and coons while you're trying to hog hunt. Not good.

They said that there were quite a few hunters the 1st part of the week and they probably had them pushed back in further.
They went up again this afternoon and walked way back in, saw fresh sign but no hogs.
