It's Blackwater River WMA. I've never hunted there, but the location being right at Pensacola would make me think there are plenty of hunters, but I've never seen anybody post on here about hunting there. Ask your question and I'll see if I can help.

John,
I happened to joined a north Florida forum . They got me fired up.I found some great resources within that forum.I think it was you partner who mentioned school jobs. I just checked all the counties in that area and school jobs are very scarce.

One of the members told me about Blackwater WMA and I plan to scout it / turkey hunt there in the fall. I understand there are no checkout stations there. You pay to camp, cleanyour deer and drive on home. It's 430 miles away from me and 6 hours and 30 minutes...but that is closer than 17 hoursto Missouri.

Most of my questions were answered by the other forum John but here are a couple of others.
1. It looks like 189 goes right straight through the WMA. Do I just drive up there and pull off the side of the road and hunt..or is there a cetain place to park?
2.I pulled up the area on Google maps..It appears to be mostly pines , creeks and dried creek beds .Is this correct?

3.How are the other hunters in the area? I hear they can be rowdy.

4. Also..I would like to get that clarified; thatif I shoot a turkey , hog, or deer that I don't needto check it in.This doesn't seem right.

Thanks Mr. Law.

Well, I got some of these questions answered from teh Pensocola forum

Most of my questions were answered by the other forum John but here are a couple of others.
1. It looks like 189 goes right straight through the WMA. Do I just drive up there and pull off the side of the road and hunt..or is there a cetain place to park? Yes...there are 3 lakes. You pay 13.00 park and begin hunting..that easy.
2.I pulled up the area on Google maps..It appears to be mostly pines , creeks and dried creek beds .Is this correct? Yes.

3.How are the other hunters in the area? I hear they can be rowdy.
Some are very unethical some are nice..there is a mixture.

4. Also..I would like to get that clarified; thatif I shoot a turkey , hog, or deer that I don't needto check it in.This doesn't seem right.
You only need to keep the sex parts of a deer in case you are stopped. Otherwise...skin , it pack it..drive on home.

I've never hunted Blackwater, but I know a guy with the Fl. Water
Management unit that lives in the area I was trying to get some information from. Blackwater was a beautiful forest till the hurricane ripped through it a couple of years ago. I know you said one time about hunting in Holmes County. They will have a 3 day turkey season this year and due to their restocking program over the last 6 or so years there are a ton of turkeys in the county. They are building the new elementary school west of DeFuniak Springs now, should be open next fall. The friend of mine on the school board said they need a lot of good teachers.

John, I would love to get hired up there. I did some research. They are mostly like the folks in Missouri { In which I understand} they are first goingto take care of their own. My wife and I looked and chatted with other teachers on a forum in that area. Teaching jobs are very scarce up there. I would be very interested .Holmes on the demographics looked like a nice county to live in. I do hear that northern Florida is growing fast.

I'm thinking very seriouslyabout coming up there to Blackwater to turkey hunt / scout. Here in the Green Swamp in 5 years I've sat in a stand at least 60 times. I wear digital camos alot, cover scent and hunt high .While in a stand I've seen in those 60 times/ 5 years 1 spike, 4 does , and 4 hogs...and 1 hen turkey. I've seen more but I'm talking about while actually in the stand.

I'd say it's time to move on.I was talking to a fellow in Escambia..It was his first year at Blackwater..He said. "I saw deer just about every time I hunted." I killed 3 does and a 5 point." Yep, I need to move on .

Thanks for replying John.

PS...John , principals can now pull up a teacher's stats to see how well they teach. Mine are way up there. My background is teaching the slower ones and bringing them up to level. That can be seen in my data on the IDEAS screen that all principals have access to. I'm only saying that so that if you ever hooked me up I wouldn't embarass you. My principal loves me down here but the traffic, and population is getting crazy. PLus, the hunting is rather poor. [8D]
