SKS is generally not a very accurate rifle, so I would want to keep my shots under 100yds for sure. Also, since it's a military caliber, you may have a more difficult time finding rounds loaded with hunting bullets. For deer hunting, I would suggest a gun with a reputation for better accuracy like a Mauser or a K31. Either could be found for under $150.

I've got a CETME that I shoot hogs and coyotes with. .308 does a number on them.

Actually I started in 1952, but 1967 is the year I bought 10 Surplus Rifles from J.M.Fields for $9 ea.I got there a coupleof hours after they set them out and had pick of the litter!

As a matter of fact I used it at Gulf Hammock WMA in Yankee Towne.

I have a British Enfield .303 that is great on deer. My grandpa had one when I was a kid that he had me use when we went hunting. I have shot 3 deer with mine and have had no problems. I have not sporterized it with a new stock or added the scope mounts. It still has the original sights on it. I have not taken a shot on deer over 100yds, my middle aged eyes have some trouble with iron sights at longer distances, but under 100 it is a sweet set-up.
