I've been offered a job in Austin and although still netotiating,it looks likely that we'll be moving there soon.
What's hunting like in that part of the world? Is there much public land available to huntin the Austin area? How hard is it to find a hunting lease? It's next to impossible here in NW Arkansas. What do leases go for per acre down there? What kind of game in the area? I assume deer and hogs, what about turkey, quail, rabbits, squirrel, varmints / coyotes? What else?
Any info on the area would be greatly appreciated.

ten years ago my step dad had a lease down near Sonora Tx that we would go to. I loved those days more than anything. In my opinion south texas is the greatest place on earth. I know that saying that is almost sacriligious since I am from Oklahoma, but it is amazing down there. Tons of deer, javelinas, and everythng else under the sun. Back then I think he paid somewhere around $1200 a year for 1100 acres. Im sure it has gone way up since then. If I ever win the lotto im going to dissapear in south texas.
Sorry I could be much help as far as your specific questions

there's some of the best hunting in the whole state within a couple of hours drive from Austin from deer, exotics, hogs, ducks, geese, coyotes, bobcats.
To find a lease do a search on Google or some of the other forums like TexasBowhunter.com and you'll find all sorts of information.
Now public land is another story. Texas has over a million acres of available public land for hunting but you have to realize that 98% of all land in Texas is PRIVATELY owned and that's why leases are so high dollar.
Go to the Texas Parks & Wildlife site and you can find the available public land around Austin.
Texas can be broken up into about 5 parts, each area is different than the other. The Hill country area has a lot of cedar and oaks and has the highest population of a deer than anywhere in the world, but body size is kind of small, not a lot of hogs in the hill country. South Texas is a whole lot of mesquite and thorny brush, very very thick, you cant even walk through it, has lots of deer and bigger body size deer with better racks in my opinion lots a hog, javelina, coyotes, bobcats rabbits rattle snakes etc.
Do a search on the Golden triangle. This area is considered to be the best chance at record book bucks. Hunting here is very expensive. Leases are not hard to find if you have the money. West Texas is wide open, you need thousands of acres to hunt there, has mule deer and pronghorn.
To me either hill country or south texas is where I would look. Austin is in the Hill Country but about 200 mlies from the best south Texas hunting.
If you find a lease I might be interested in getting in on it. Just remember to PM me. Public land is hard to come by, usally only drawing hunts are conducted in those areas.
this thread caught my attention because I'm moving to Denton Co. in late Spring, early Summer and I have no idea what to expect.I'm a northeast woods deer hunter and next fall is gonna be an eye opener. My girl has 80acres to hunt in Montague Co. so that's comforting to have as a backup.

JimPic, you will only be about an hour and a half away from me, Im further north. I raced at Denton on the strip a few times, decent area around there and a little farther east.

You can also hunt at Fort Hood. 216,000 acres for $100 a year to hunt. Big deer, hogs and turkey. A few exotics too.
