Default acorns in n.va.

I was out yesterday at a friends house practicing with the bow after the storms had passed and looked down at the ground and there was white oak acorns laying everywhere, guess the winds brought them down early,,,i was wondering if any of you va. guys were seeing the same thing in your hunting areas,,,i get really excited when we have mast crops as most of my hunting is in wooded public areas

good luck this season!

I looked over my area on thursday before the storm and alot of acorns were already on the ground. It doesn't look like there are as many acorns this year as last, but they were already hitting the corn pretty good.

I went squirrel hunting this morning and to my surprise found that the squirrels were cutting the oaks. There were very few hickories with nuts on them. And, it looks like the acorns were starting to drop on their own too. I've read a few forums that discussed the issue of acorns dropping earlier than usual this year. We maybe in for a bad winter!

Last weekend (before the storm), I went to Pocahontas State Park to scout around the north part of it (which is open to hunting) and heard dozens of acorns falling in the woods. Looked like a great area to try this season, but I'd have to go far in off the main trails. I saw a lot of mountain bikers and nature walkers/bird watchers too.

Anyway, with the acorns already falling, it looks as though food will be readily available early in the season.
